"Spirituality and Love of Family"
9 a.m. Sundays--In Fellowship Hall A
Throughout November, we will look at relationships between
familial love and spirituality with a special interest in the
uses of story in exploring such relationships. As all of us
know, family relationships are rich resources for thinking about
relationships--in Biblical stories, for example, God is
frequently figured as "father." How can/do stories of familial
love and spirituality speak to us? What stories might we
tell?
November 2: "Coming to Terms with Love, Loss and Limits"
Joy Castro, Department of English, University of
Nebraska-Lincoln - Join us in hearing about one writer's efforts
to make sense of her own complicated childhood through the
weaving of multiple and only half-knowable stories. Through this
effort, we will engage questions of uncertainty, forgiveness and
spirituality in family story.
November 9: "Religiosity and the Family: A Research
Perspective" - Colleen Culaner, Department of
Communication Studies, University of Nebraska-Lincoln - This meeting
will introduce us to research on how families transmit religious
and spiritual beliefs from one generation to the next. This
conversation will engage us in thinking about our own families
and how our own spiritual traditions are expressed in our
day-to-day lives.
November 16: "Balancing Family, Work, Love & Faith"
-
This panel discussion will feature a variety of church
members sharing their experiences with and strategies for
balancing work, family, love and faith on a daily basis. All who
come are invited to share their own concerns, questions or
strategies for meeting the complex demands of our multiple
roles as parents, children, siblings, workers and Christians.
November 23: "Family, Spirit and the Literary Imagination"
- Debbie Minter,
Department of English,
University of Nebraska-Lincoln - Join us in discussing a
particular short story (to be announced/ shared soon!) that
features family members who are engaged in spiritual and
familial struggle. Our discussion will take us to questions
of the literary imagination and the place of story- telling in
working out complicated relationships between the earthly
and the divine.
November 30: "Telling Our Own Family Stories--A Workshop"
Dr. Jody Koenig Kellas, Department of Communication Studies, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
In this workshop, we'll focus on the function of telling
family stories, beginning to recall and reconnect with the
meaningful stories of our own spiritual and family lives.
Join us in considering what it might mean to bring focus
to these stories and to share them with others who are
important to us.
